Founder's Day 2015

CELEBRATING FOUNDER’S DAY AT CHIJ (KATONG) PRIMARY to mark our 85th Anniversary.

Pupils, staff and parents celebrated Founders Day on Thursday 28th May. The day began with a Eucharistic celebration with the theme Joyful in Hope, Generous in Service.

Fr Eugene Vaz was the main celebrant together with Fr Damian Dewind. In his homily, Fr Vaz spoke about how being an IJ girl meant belonging to a family- one that we grow together with in our experience of God, both in the home and at school. Through the years, generations of IJ girls have received the gift of learning and an education. Fr Vaz called for a moment of reflection to think about how this gift can be used in service of others, just as Blessed Nicolas Barre followed his calling to serve the poor and under privileged in society.

As Hope is the theme for the year, the school continued with their yearly Gift of Love project. This project that involves the whole school community reached out to the Infant Jesus Homes and Children’s centres, the Gift of Love home and to the victims in Nepal. Through this project, the school comes together as a community of faith to show our compassion for others following in the footsteps of Blessed Nicolas Barre whose mission was to help the less fortunate and to bring hope to others in society. In all the school raised about $23 000 for the project. It was also to help staff and pupils see that as a Catholic School Community we are committed to proclaim and live out the Gospel.

Before the Eucharistic celebration, representatives from the school, placed on the table symbols that represent the life at CHIJ (Katong) Primary.

After the Mass, the school paid tributes to our IJ Sisters present. A special tribute was given to Mrs Doris Teoh who was instrumental in the merge of CHIJ Opera Estate and the primary section of Katong Convent in 1990.

Subsequently, there was a short skit by some students which took the audience back in time to revisit the history of our school.  The celebration ended with Hold on to Our Dream, the beautiful song that all IJ students are familiar with. Everyone sang joyously, embracing one another with sisterly love.
