85th Anniversary Carnival
On Saturday, 30th May 2015, CHIJ (Katong) Primary celebrated its 85th Anniversary with a much-awaited-for carnival. The event was held concurrently with Art from the Heart V, an annual art auction at IJ Katong.
Blessed with beautiful weather, the day started with much enthusiasm and excitement as the school geared up to extend a warm welcome to invited guests for the opening ceremony. They were made up of ex-principals, ex-vice principals, pioneer teachers (retired and current teachers), 3 generations of IJ Katong girls (current pupils, their mothers and grandmothers), as well as children from Towner Garden School and their families. Ms Cheryl Fox, an ex-pupil of Opera Estate Convent herself, hosted the opening segment, which included performances by the school choir and Dance girls, as well as poetry recitation by Mrs Sylvia Liew, our ex- VP. She read a poem she had written specially for the occasion.
The carnival was a true testimony of the IJ Katong family spirit as teachers, students and parent volunteers pitched in to run the range of stalls – food, games, balloon sculpting, henna and face painting. There was even a haunted house, a jumble sale and our very on IJ Emporium. The school, which was transformed into a carnival arena, was soon flocked with current students, ex-KCians and their families who came to show their support and meet up with old friends and teachers. The Art from the Heart Art Auction was also a success as all the items auctioned off during the live auction were sold. The good turnout gave great satisfaction to all those who had invested much time and effort into the event.
Other highlights of the day included the IJ Talent Hunt, a flash mob by the teachers and students, as well as the dunking machine, which attracted the crowd most when the principal and the vice-principals were dunked! It was indeed a day of great fun for all.
