Thanksgiving Mass 2017

The theme of our Thanksgiving Mass this year is As One in Thanksgiving. Mass started with a moment of quiet contemplation, as our students reflected on their memories, words and actions during the year.

The P6 Graduation Party was held on Friday, 3 November, at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport. The students turned out in beautiful dresses and were treated to many fun-filled activities and a sumptuous lunch.

Racial Harmony Day 2017

Every year around 21st July, schools in Singapore commemorate Racial Harmony Day to mark the anniversary of the 1964 racial riots. This year, the theme for Racial Harmony Day is “Our Singapore Way”.

On the 7th of July 2017, the Primary 6 girls had their IJ Day of Recollection. With the help of the teachers and parent volunteers, the girls were treated to a video montage and a sharing session to reminisce their journey as an IJ girl, from when they were in Primary 1 all the way through to Primary 6.

Hydroponics @ IJ Katong 2017

The Science Club girls have embarked on a new Hydroponics project. Hydroponics is gardening without soil and is a great way to grow vegetables, fruits and herbs under totally controlled conditions. It involves using artificial lighting.

HUSH... Let's Read is a termly school-wide silent reading activity conducted in the school hall before morning assembly. This activity encourages students and staff alike to engage in reading a book of their choice in silence. 


English Story-Telling Session @ MRL 2017

H2Olypmics Amazing Race 2017

Over the holidays, 11 March 2017, two teams of eight girls, comprising Primary 5 and 6 Science Monitors, participated in the H2Olypmics Amazing Race at Dunman High School.

24 Brownies gathered in school at 6.45am on a Saturday morning to celebrate the World Thinking Day with the other sister Guides and Brownies in Singapore. The event is celebrated annually by Guiding sisters all around the world to commemorate our founders’, Lord Baden-Powell’s and his wife Lady Baden-Powell’s birthday.

Between 28 March to 31 March, 10 of our advanced sailors participated in the National Sailing Championships 2017. The girls displayed the virtues of perseverance, resilience and commitment as they had to brave through tough storms and bad weather during some of the races.

On 28th & 29th March, our seven Junior and seven Senior gymnasts participated in the National School Games Championship. Our girls gave their best in the competition, which gave them good exposure and a great learning experience.

Our school’s biennial Sports Day was held on 10th March, at Victoria Junior College's track. After many rounds of selections and heats, the day finally came for the competitors to put themselves to the test on the ‘big stage’.

During the March Holidays, the Arts Monitors went on a Learning Journey to the Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle.  Thow Kwang Dragon Kiln is one of the oldest surviving brick–built Kilns in Singapore for wood firing.

Tang Quartet Classical Adventures 2017

On 1st March 2017, the world renowned and premier string quartet of Singapore, the Tang Quartet performed Classical Adventures at Assembly. Students were introduced to Classical Chamber Music, the differences in appearance and sound range of the instruments of a string quartet, familiar classical tunes, and different techniques of playing the instruments.

This year the primary 5 students embarked on a learning journey to East Coast Park. It was a nature trail organised by the science department with the aim of learning and understand the functions and characteristics of the flora and fauna found at East Coast Park as well as to know how they are dispersed.

The Primary 4 students went on a 2-day-1-night camp at the Singapore Zoo and had a fun-filled learning journey. Besides going on enriching guided tours around the zoo and river safari in the day, the girls spent an exciting evening watching the Creatures of the Night Show at the Night Safari.

Learning Fest 2017

The annual Learning Fest at CHIJ (Katong) Primary School was held on Saturday, 18 February 2017. Parents signed up for workshops conducted by staff and vendors of the school. These workshops were designed to strengthen the partnership between teachers and parents by helping parents have a better understanding of how to support their children in their learning.

On 21 January, the Handbell Ensemble participated guest performers in a concert, MOB-X: Classic Celebrations, organized by the Ministry of Bellz. In the days leading up to the performance, the girls put in a lot of effort and were committed in perfecting their ringing.

Our Primary 6 students went on a conducted trail of Chinatown on 20 January to explore and learn about the rich heritage of Chinatown. By the end of the trail, the students would have a better understanding and knowledge of the ‘Past and Present Chinatown’ and ‘Life in Chinatown’.

On the 6th of January 2017, the school celebrated the inaugural celebration of the Epiphany or what it is also known as, The Three Kings Paraliturgy. Mr Edward Toh shared with the school the true meaning of Christmas and the significance of the Epiphany in relation to Christmas.

Let's Recycle with Our Friends and Fathers is an annual project at CHIJ (Katong) Primary. It is a collaborative effort between the Science Department and our students' fathers in our recycling efforts to raise awareness in conserving our natural resources.

P6 Dining Etiquette 2016

As part of their Post-PSLE activities, the Primary 6 students had a full day course on Dining Etiquette kindly run by the Parent Volunteers on 21 October 2016. Visiting 5 stations, the girls learnt about cultural eating practices of the four races, Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian.

Arts Programme for P6 - A Capella 101 2016

On Thursday, 27 October, Mr Dylan Foster and 4 vocalists from Total Vocal preformed for the P6 students and teachers. Mr Foster who is a globally renowned vocal coach and certified singing instructor explained to the students what ‘ contemporary a cappelle’ is and the elements that define it as a music genre.

On 4 August 2016, the Primary 6 pupils took a break from school lessons and visited the Science Centre for a Learning Journey. Revising their Science concepts in a fun way, they attended an interactive lecture filled with experiments on Forces and Energy.

On 11th July, 14th  July and 1st August 2016, the Primary 3 students visited the Wallace Trail at Dairy Farm Nature Park for their Social Studies cum English Learning Journey. This trail exposed the girls to nature and the outdoors, beyond their

Assembly Programme - Hip Hop 2016

On Monday, 11 April, Danz People put up a Hip Hop dance exposure programme during the Assembly programme. There was a short lecture and several demonstrations of the various types of movements in Hip Hop dance. Students were informed on where and how Hip Hop started, the reasons it was started and how it has evolved through the years.

The Primary 2 students went on a learning journey to the National Orchid Garden in Term 2.  The learning journey, which integrated Mathematics, Social Studies and Programme for Active Learning (PAL), aimed to give students the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while solving real-life Maths problems.

Assembly Programme - Dondang Sayang 2016

On Monday, 21 April, Sri Mahligai presented An Introduction to Dondang Sayang at Assembly. Students were introduced to traditional Malay and Chinese Peranakan Music. As Dondang Sayang dates as far back as 500 years ago, the students were captivated by the ability of the singers to duet and sing spontaneous pantuns.

P5 Nature Trail @ East Coast Park 2016

The Primary 5 students went on a nature trail at East Coast Park to learn about the flora and fauna there. The nature guides led the students around the East Coast Park and taught them about the plants and insects. They found it very interesting that their classmates shared on the various facts about the flora and fauna, instead of their teachers.

The Primary 4 students went to the Singapore Zoo for a two-day camp at the end of February. The students were given opportunities to learn more about themselves, and develop greater self-esteem and curiosity about wildlife and the natural world around them.

First Family Mass 2016

Our first family mass for the year was held on Friday, 12 March. The theme for the year is “Be Forgiving, Grow in Love”. In his homily, Fr. Derrick Yap, the celebrant, used the analogy from the movie, Frozen, to help the girls understand the meaning of sacrifice as it took a lot of pain and sacrifice in order for one to save another from being hurt.

P6 SS Learning Journey to Chinatown 2016

On 25 January 2016, the Primary 6 pupils went to Chinatown for a Learning Journey. Using iTrail, a learning trail app on a Samsung note, pupils navigated around historical sites in Chinatown using GPS. The app also provided them with information on the history and culture of the Chinese, Indians and Malays in Singapore.

The Primary 5 students went on a learning journey to Little India on 10 February 2016. They experienced mobile learning using the Samsung Note instead of the normal pen and paper. The students used the Samsung Note to take photographs and recorded information using an app.

It was an evening to remember. Performers from three IJ schools put up yet another great concert at the University Cultural Centre on 16 Nov 2015.  Rhythm in Blue II, the biennial Performing Arts Concert featured performances by our Choir, Handbells Ensemble, Dance Club as well as guest performances by the CHIJ Katong Convent Chinese Orchestra and CHIJ (Toa Payoh) Primary’s Choir.

On Monday, 2 November, the school engaged John & Deniece Studios to put up a musical extravaganza, entitled GLEE, Introduction to Show Choirs. The Show Choir Community has been growing in Singapore for the past two years. In this programme, students watched a live show choir performance by 4 performers.

P4 LJ @ Road Safety Park

On 2 Nov 2015, the P4 pupils went out on a learning journey to Road Safety Community Park (RSCP) at East Coast Park.  It was a learning journey that many of the girls were looking forward to.  The girls were divided into three groups and played different roles as pedestrians, cyclists or Go-Kart drivers.

Cyber Wellness Day @ IJ: Cyber Comic Challenge

To deepen students’ understanding of Cyber Wellness issues, the Cyber Wellness Committee launched a Cyber Comic Challenge across all levels. Students were required to design their own comic strips based on different themes.

P6 Dining Etiquette Workshop 2015

As one of the post-PSLE activities for the primary 6 students, a ‘Dining Etiquette’ workshop was conducted on 23 October. In keeping with our school vision, ‘From girls to women of grace and substance’, the workshop was conducted by our Parent Volunteers to introduce our students to the finer points of dining etiquette as well as to make them more knowledgeable of the different dining etiquette practised by  the Malay, Indian, Chinese community.

IJ Katong @ SiTF Awards 2015

In Term 3, two of our students, Esther Anna Abraham (AM5) and Faith Khoo (MO5) represented our school in presenting our project "Towards a Cyber Smart IJ" for SiTF* Awards 2015. The girls presented our project to a panel of judges comprising of infocomm business leaders, veterans and educators.

On 26th August 2015, the Primary 3 pupils went on a Maths Trail at Marina Barrage. During the Maths Trail, pupils interacted with one another to solve mathematical problems.

P5 LJ to Little India 2015

On 19 August 2015, the Primary 5 pupils went to Little India for a Learning Journey. Using a learning trail app on a Samsung note, pupils navigated around Little India using the GPS. The app also provided them with information on the history and culture of Indians in Singapore.

On Monday, 6 July, Creative Tree Company, a dance theatre, staged a story through the use of theatre and dance entitled, “Where is my cat? Here’s my dog”, during our assembly period.  The performance featured a fusion of physical theatre and 3 different forms of dance, namely ballet, contemporary and percussion dance.

39 P6 pupils and staff gathered at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on  4th July at 12.30pm to participate in a Thanksgiving Eucharistic Celebration to commemorate the nation’s 50th birthday. Mr Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister of Singapore, was the Guest-of-Honour.

P5 Adventure Camp


From 12 to 14 March 2015, the Primary 5 pupils had their Adventure Camp at Changi Coast Adventure Centre. Over the course of 3 days, the pupils gamely stepped out of their comfort zone and challenged themselves to a series of outdoor activities which included rock climbing, kayaking, abseiling, ziplining and a challenge rope course.

As a new school year kicked off to a start, all Catholic staff gathered on 10 January 2015 for a Day of Recollection on Prayer. Held at the Heritage room in St Patrick’s School, the theme of the session was ‘Prayer in Everyday life’. Brother Don Basil shared various ways through which we could communicate with God in our daily lives and how we could put ourselves in prayer.

The annual Learning Fest at CHIJ (Katong) Primary School was held on Saturday, 7 February, 2015. Parents signed up for workshops conducted by staff and vendors of the school. These workshops were designed to help parents have a better understanding of how to support their children in their learning. A total of thirteen workshops were conducted, and parents who attended were enthusiastic.
